Warm the Milk: Heat milk until it’s warm to the touch (about 110°F). Avoid making it too hot, as this can kill the yeast.
Add Yeast and Sugar: Sprinkle the yeast and sugar into the warm milk and give it a gentle stir. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it turns bubbly and foamy, indicating that the yeast is active.
Step 2: Prepare the Dough
Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, salt, butter (or oil), and the yeast mixture.
Knead the Dough: Knead the dough by hand for 8–10 minutes or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for about 5 minutes on medium speed. You’ll know the dough is ready when it feels smooth and elastic.
Step 3: First Rise
Place Dough in a Greased Bowl: Lightly grease a bowl, place the dough inside, and cover it with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours or until it doubles in size.
Punch Down the Dough: Gently press down on the dough to release any trapped air bubbles, preparing it for shaping.
Step 4: Shape and Second Rise
Shape the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface, shape it into a loaf, and tuck the edges under to create a smooth top.
Place in Loaf Pan: Place the shaped dough in a greased loaf pan, cover, and let it rise again for 30–45 minutes, or until it rises about an inch above the rim of the pan.
Step 5: Bake the Bread
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Bake the Bread: Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
Cool and Slice: Allow the bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Slice only when fully cooled for best results.
