Gently crush the saffron threads in a small bowl using the back of a spoon. This helps release its oils and color.
Add 3 tablespoons of warm water to the crushed saffron and let it steep for 5–10 minutes. The liquid will turn a vibrant yellow-orange.
Step 2: Rinse the Rice
Place the basmati rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch, ensuring the rice cooks up light and fluffy.
Step 3: Cook the Rice
Heat butter or olive oil in a medium pot over medium heat.
Add the rinsed rice and sauté for 1–2 minutes, coating each grain with the fat. This step enhances the nutty flavor of the rice.
Add the water, saffron mixture, and salt. If using optional aromatics like cinnamon or cloves, add them now.
Step 4: Simmer and Steam
Bring the rice mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and let it simmer for 15–20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
Step 5: Fluff and Serve
Remove the pot from heat and allow the rice to rest for 5 minutes. Fluff the grains gently with a fork.
Serve warm, garnished with your choice of nuts, herbs, or raisins.
